jeff's space fund
Fund “Jeff’s Space” – a much needed space for family meetings and mental health counseling for older adults.
Heights and Hills is creating a warm and comfortable safe space for families to spend time together. This will also be used as a space for people to share their concerns and challenges in life with trained mental health professionals who will provide the support they need.
In thinking about what to name this room, we thought “who embodies the spirit of this room better than our recent Board Chair, Jeff Helfgott?” Jeff served on the Board from 2011-2020. As a long time Brooklyn resident, choosing to serve Heights and Hills was an easy decision for him. His parents were aging and he values the quality care Heights and Hills provides to those who do not have the necessary support.
Jeff’s appreciation for Heights and Hills grew after his diagnosis with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer in November 2018. Despite a tough prognosis, being part of the larger brain tumor community through journaling, support groups, individual counseling, and access to social work in addition to the outstanding medical team provided a sense of community and hope. It’s his intention that this room provide a source of healing to others facing a tough moment in their lives.
Jeff passed away in the early hours of Friday, June 12, 2020 with his loving husband, Peter, at his side.
Jeff was compassionate, pragmatic and always kind. His sense of humor, through good and bad times, lifted the spirits of those around him. That’s why we are naming this safe space at Heights and Hills “Jeff’s Space”.
Funds raised for “Jeff’s Space” will purchase new furniture such as a small couch, comfortable chairs, end tables, a lamp, and framed artwork by Jeff. The room also needs to be painted. Our goal is to raise $7,500 and if your generosity exceeds the amount needed to create this space, we will allocate additional funds toward our COVID-19 response.
Gifts can be made online or you can send a check payable to Heights and Hills, 81 Willoughby Street, Suite 302, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Please write “Jeff’s Space” on memo line.
Please donate what you can. Spread the love that Jeff so generously gives everyday.
